Anionic supramolecular assemblies in conductive cation radical salts: Iodine-containing molecules as building blocks

The negative charge of this kind of supramolecular assembly is suitable for counter anions in conductive cation radical salts. Not only can it accomplish charge balance in the salt, it can also restrict the packing mode of the donor molecules (= cation radical molecules ∗1 ) which governs the physical properties of the salt. Compared to discrete anions, such as I3 or ClO4 , used in most other conductive cation radical salts, the infinite assembly has tighter constraints on the crystal packing. Design of the crystal structures is, therefore, possible to some extent through supramolecular design, and it is an effective way of controlling the physical properties of the cation radical salts. From this point of view, the author has examined the structures of the supramolecular assemblies in the co-crystal with cation radical molecules, and also pursued the designing principle for the entire crystal structure.2–4)
